Nairobi Woman in Tears After Viewing Body of Husband Killed During Raila Odinga’s Body Viewing at Kasarani

Tragedy struck in Kasarani on the day Kenyans gathered to pay their final respects to the late ODM leader, Raila Amollo Odinga.

What was meant to be a solemn day of national mourning turned into heartbreak after police fired teargas and live bullets to control crowds, leaving several people injured and three confirmed dead.

Among those killed was Evans Onyango Kiche, a 40-year-old father of three from Nairobi. His wife, Brenda Akoth, broke down in tears when she identified his body at the City Mortuary on Friday.

Evans had left their home that morning, telling his family he wanted to bid farewell to “Baba,” a man he deeply admired. Sadly, he never returned.

Brenda described her late husband as a loving, patient, and hardworking man who cared deeply for his family. “He was our protector and our peace,” she said, her voice shaking with emotion.

“Even when life was tough, he always found a way to make us smile. I just want justice for my husband. He didn’t deserve to die this way.”

Human rights activist Hussein Khalid, who accompanied Brenda to the mortuary, condemned the use of excessive force by police during such a sensitive national event.

He urged authorities to take responsibility and ensure the families of the victims get justice.

Eyewitnesses said chaos started after the crowd became too large to control, with many struggling to access the stadium gates. What began as mourning quickly turned into panic as gunshots were heard.

The death of Evans Onyango has left a deep wound not only in his family but also among Kenyans who believe his only mistake was wanting to say a final goodbye to a leader he loved.

Social media has since been flooded with condolence messages and calls for accountability.

One user wrote, “It is painful to see people losing their lives while mourning another. When will justice ever come for the common man?”

By Friday evening, police had not yet released an official statement on the number of casualties or arrests made.

For Brenda, the pain remains raw.

“My children keep asking where their father is,” she whispered.

“How do I tell them he went to mourn Baba and never came back?”
