A pastor from Gem in Siaya County is at the center of a serious controversy after being accused of marrying a 17-year-old girl who is still in school.
The case has shocked many in the community, especially after claims emerged that the girl’s mother had also been in a secret relationship with the same pastor.
According to residents, the girl, a Form Three student, stopped attending classes several weeks ago.
It later came to light that she had moved into the home of the pastor, who is known in the area for leading a local church.
“We had no idea something like this was happening,” said a concerned neighbor.
“Everyone respected him as a man of God. Now we are left with so many questions.”
Even more troubling to many is the allegation that the girl's mother had a long-standing relationship with the same pastor.
Community members say she was often seen visiting his house, and some believe she may have even encouraged her daughter’s involvement.
Local child rights organizations and community leaders have strongly condemned the situation, calling for swift investigations and protection for the girl.
“This is a case of child exploitation,” said a representative from a children’s welfare group.
“A 17-year-old is still a minor under Kenyan law, and she should be in school — not in marriage.”
The matter has been reported to the local authorities, and investigations are already underway.
Siaya County police have confirmed that they are looking into possible offenses, including child marriage and neglect of parental responsibility.
“The safety of the girl is our top concern,” a police spokesperson said.
“Anyone found to have broken the law will face the consequences.”
The girl is currently staying at the pastor’s home, but child protection officers are working to ensure her well-being while the case is being handled.
Many in Gem are still in disbelief over the incident, with some expressing anger at the betrayal of trust by a religious leader, while others urge for calm and proper investigation.
