Talks Emerge on Silent Figure Ruto Might Pick as Running Mate to Expand His Appeal in ODM Heartland

As the 2027 general election draws closer, political discussions in Kenya are heating up. Leaders across the country are already holding private meetings and forming new alliances ahead of the next big race for State House.

President William Ruto, who is expected to seek a second term, is reportedly planning a major political move to strengthen his chances.

According to reports by the People Daily on Monday, November 10, 2025, Ruto is said to be considering a surprise choice for his running mate.

Sources close to his inner circle suggest that he might pick a “silent figure” from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) strongholds to help him attract votes from regions that traditionally support the opposition.

The publication reveals that President Ruto is now focusing on the Nyanza and Coast regions, which could play a major role in deciding the 2027 outcome.

After losing strong political support from parts of the Mt Kenya region, Ruto is reportedly exploring new ways to expand his influence beyond his traditional base.

Political analysts believe that one of the strongest names being discussed is that of Ali Hassan Joho, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs.

Joho, a former Mombasa Governor and a key ODM figure, is seen as a leader who commands huge respect both at the Coast and among ODM supporters.

If Ruto were to choose Joho as his running mate, it would mark a bold political strategy aimed at weakening ODM’s dominance in the Coast region.

The area has long supported Raila Odinga, but in recent years, some local leaders have shown interest in working with Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government.

Analysts note that Ruto’s move to approach Joho could also be part of a wider plan to show inclusivity and appeal to regions that have often felt left out of government.

However, this idea remains speculation, as neither Ruto nor Joho has confirmed any such talks.
