Gachagua Faces Fresh Criticism as Senator Cherargei Claims Panic in Mt. Kenya Politics

Senator Samson Cherargei has launched a sharp attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of panicking ahead of the 2027 elections despite earlier assuring the nation that the Mt. Kenya voting bloc was firmly under his control.

Cherargei’s remarks come at a time when political temperatures in the region continue to rise, with leaders trading statements as they seek to shape early narratives.

Speaking during a public event, Cherargei said Gachagua has no authority to threaten anyone because, in his view, the deputy president is already showing signs of fear.

He referenced Gachagua’s previous claim that Mt. Kenya votes were “under lock and key,” questioning why the same leader now appears deeply unsettled.

According to Cherargei, Gachagua’s recent activities show a man under pressure.

He accused the deputy president of moving tirelessly from one village to another, visiting homes, market centres, and small gatherings in an attempt to rebuild support.

Cherargei also mocked Gachagua’s habit of carrying a tea thermos and bread during his tours, describing it as a campaign carried out in desperation rather than confidence.

The senator further claimed that Gachagua’s outreach has become so intense that he is engaging in ordinary rural tasks such as plucking miraa and even helping to milk cows.

To him, these actions portray someone working overtime to reassure a region he once claimed to command fully.

Cherargei wondered aloud why Gachagua, whom he referred to as “Mr. Quarter Term,” has suddenly become anxious if indeed the Mt. Kenya votes were secure.

He suggested that Gachagua’s fears may stem from emerging political shifts that are reshaping dynamics in the influential region.
