Edwin Sifuna is today recognized as one of Kenya’s most vocal legislators, but his path to prominence was far from easy.
His story is one of resilience, ambition, and the courage to walk away from comfort in pursuit of purpose.
After graduating from the University of Nairobi in 2008 with a law degree, Sifuna’s hopes were quickly dashed by the political turmoil of the post‑election violence.
The instability left him jobless for 19 months, a period marked by hardship as he lived in a modest bedsitter in South B, Nairobi, with rent arrears piling up.
Yet his accommodating landlord gave him the breathing space to endure.
His fortunes shifted when he landed a job at Supa Loaf, earning Ksh 40,000. His first paycheck went straight to clearing rent arrears.
Soon after, he joined an advertising company where he was entrusted with legal affairs and rewarded with a salary of Ksh 150,000 and a company car.
By 2013, he was earning Ksh 400,000 monthly. However, the pressure from what he described as a “boss from hell” took a toll on his mental health.
In a bold move, Sifuna resigned and set up his own law firm, setting a modest target of Ksh 50,000 per month.
Within two weeks, he surpassed it, buoyed by a thriving economy where land deals, company registrations, and tenders demanded legal expertise.
With financial independence secured, he turned his attention to politics.
His political journey began during his university days when he first met Raila Odinga. After the 2013 elections, he reconnected with Odinga, who invited him to ODM meetings. Though initially denied a party ticket in Kakamega, fate redirected him to Nairobi.
ODM officials saw his potential and backed him for the senatorial race against Johnson Sakaja. Though he lost, he garnered an impressive 700,000 votes.
In 2018, Sifuna was appointed ODM Secretary‑General, a role that elevated his profile nationally.
By 2022, his campaign benefited from experience and party support, leading to his election as Nairobi senator.
