Facing declining support in the crucial Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 general elections, President William Ruto has turned to Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri as a key strategist to reclaim political momentum in the vote-rich area.
Kiunjuri, a seasoned fourth-term legislator with deep regional influence, brings substantial political credentials to the role.
He previously served as Agriculture Minister under former President Uhuru Kenyatta and maintained close ties with the late President Mwai Kibaki.
His appointment signals a strategic shift in Ruto's approach to the region following a turbulent period marked by tensions with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The MP, who supported Gachagua's removal from power, has since been appointed chair of the Kenya Kwanza parliamentary caucus.
His first significant challenge will be the upcoming Mbeere North by-election, where the ruling coalition aims to demonstrate its continued dominance in Mount Kenya politics.
The vacancy emerged following Geoffrey Ruku's appointment to the Cabinet.
Under the new arrangement, Kiunjuri will focus on bolstering support in western Mount Kenya counties while Deputy President Kithure Kindiki concentrates on eastern areas.
This division of labor represents Ruto's concerted effort to stabilize his political base through experienced regional operators as he prepares for the next electoral contest.
